Default Looking to buy my first jeep

Hi, not been here long. Made my introductions over on the intro page.

So I've looking for a while now - I could do with some advice on what to look out for. What are the good/bad signs. Either seeing a xj for sale online or in person. Any help or advice would be appreciated. What would you expect to pay for something like a 99 Limited with 90000 on the clock?

Here in California, Rust won't be an Issue so I would look for signs of damage, lack of maintenace and that everything functions. I would expect to pay anywhere from $3500-7000 USD.

Hi and thanks for the reply

I just missed out on this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

If the ling doesn't work:

Jeep
Cherokee Limited TD.
2.5ltr Diesel.
89993 miles.
Taxed Aug 2011 Tested July2011.
We have owned this Jeep since 2007 - it is totally standard.
Limited edition with Full Leather interior.
Green Metallic Paint Work.
Radio Cassette.
Four Very Good Tyres.
This vehicle is now 12 years old and has knocks and scrapes that you would expect for its age.

It eventual sold for £1240 which is about $2000 I think

This applies to 1997 up.

1997+ have the better 8.25" axle - except for ALL Cherokees that have ABS. They are stuck with the Dana 35, as this is the only axle that came with the ABS option. Avoid it. Marginal system when new, bad for off-road.

1997 - 1999 had high pinion front axles.

1997 are known to have electrical issues. Jeep got them sorted out in the end of 1997. Be careful on any 1997, especially if the owner starts mentioning electrical issues.

1999+ got the better flowing intake manifold.

2000+ got distributor less ignition.

2000+ have low pinion front axle (same as TJ).

2000+ have cylinder head casting known to crack.

With all the above, the 'best' overall will be whatever you can get at a decent price thats suits your needs. If you want to go strictly by year, then I believe 99 without ABS is the one to get. I have a 98 Classic, and I like it.
