As with anything, when installed properly and according to instructions, there's rarely a failure.
In the hands of the general public, all bets are off.
Why does my heat gun have a warning on it not to use it to dry your hair?
Because somebody did it..............
And someone else WILL do it because they didn't read the warning or are just plain ignorant.

There is at least one person out there that cauterized their balloon knot with a curling iron. That is why we have lawyers, they make the stupid rich.

stories like this suck. everyone makes mistakes, usually out of being too comfortable with procedure. lesson learned and no one got hurt, can't really ask for much more. I don't like any aftermarket wheels enough to use spacers. but I'm getting old now and have done my fair share of sketchy modifying. I spend the money or don't do it at all. unfortunately for me I'm a cheapass sob so I have a bunch of stock parts on my stuff.

after reading the main story several times.
It seems to me the spacers did not fail at all. You just over torqued the hell out of your studs.
According to your story the spacers were still attached to the wheel and in working condition.
So unless i'm reading this wrong which has happened before, this is a thread about you over torquing wheel studs and whether you had spacers or not it would not have mattered.
over torqued is over torqued in any form.

To shed a little humor on the subject, is anyone familiar with the term Standard Navy Torque?
Standard Navy Torque: Tighten it till it breaks then back it off a quarter turn.
