locking hubs vrs locker

no they don't do the same thing.
you can have a locker with locking hubs, or no locker with locking hubs.
our jeeps have hub units that do not require locking or unlocking. they are essentially always locked. except the early jeeps that have the vacuum disconnect.
all the locking hubs did was unlock that wheel to freewheel to save fuel.
long story short, you want a locker.
a locker is in the diff and will lock both wheels together on the same axle.

wayyy off topic. but since the OP's question was already answered,
I think there's a bit of info that's been mixed up during my research of the d30. can anyone confirm that..
84-89 had vacuum disco
95-99 had the stronger axle shafts (hpd30)
I was going to pull shafts from a 95-99 and put them in my 93 hpd30 (non vac, correct?) and keep the old ones as trail spares

if you have an xj with the 231 from 87-90 stock, then you have the smaller 260 u-joint disconnect axle shaft.
if you have an xj with the 242 from 87-94 you have the larger 297 u-joint axle shaft.
if you have an xj with the 231 from 91-94 you have the smaller 260 u-joint axle shaft.

right, but isn't yours a 96?
they did that from 95 and on. so you'll have the larger u-joints regardless.
i'm sure during the renix era, only the 242 jeeps had abs for some reason. because they didn't have abs disconnect axles.
except for the 95 yj which is very hard to find.

original front axle (I swapped rear) and original t-case, non abs. It was a fish n game vehicle if that makes a difference so the original d35 had 10" brakes.

ok sooo I'm getting ready to install a HnT on my 242 tcase and decide for poop and giggles to look at the tcase tag and uhm well it said 231amc on it go figure so somewhere along the lines someone must have changed out the bezel and since I don't use full time 4wd I never really checked to make sure it even worked. Oh well I guess the good news is I've got the 231.
