Like a seinfeld episode....
Went to check out this Cherokee and aside from the oil the size of my hand on the floor underneath, I was hit with the weirdest, very strong smell that really turned me off! Salesman didn't know what it was. Too bad - thought it would be perfect (125K; California - no rust; $4500) but not gonna deal with that. on to the next one....

Jerry bought a car - I think some guy sat in it and ever since it had a funky smell that he couldn't get rid of - he tried to trade it and the dealer wouldn't take it - he finally just left it at an intersection for a guy walking by - he got in and of course.....that Jeep reeked!

My buddy threw up in my XJ, pored a bit of trans fluid in the cup holder an left my windows cracked. One week later the smell was gone, and the smell of trans fluid was gone a day after I wiped it out of the holder. Kind of a redneck trick but it worked great

My niece threw up in my Jeep, all I did was clean it up real good, and sprayed the seat and floor with Febreeze, the vomit smell went away immediately, the Febreeze smell lasted about a week.

If you could haggle on a lower price, I'd get it.
Gut the interior. You'll find the source of the smell... then steam clean and Febreeze the parts that don't contain the source of the smell, let them sit outside on a warm, dry day to air out, ALL day, preferably in the sun. Smell will be gone from that.
Replace whatever area contains the odor.
