Default lift kits?!

Still very new to this whole jeep thing... love my XJ tho!! I would love to put a 4.5" lift on her but there are so many choices?? Can someone tell me the difference between the 4.5" short and the 4.5"long arm other then $500?? I have seen prices from a few hundred up thousands?? very wide range of cash and I'm sure very wide range of places you can really go with these lifts kits!! I like the mud and water not so much sand, and not sure about any kind of rock crawling?? Looking to really beef this stock 01 XJ up but also don't want to spent a boat load right out of the gate. I really am not in to under buying and having something fail big time out on the trail. I thought a lift kit should be where I should start with really beefing this baby up?? Maybe I'm wrong about that? If so let me hear it. Thx

Google can be your best friend. Just type in whatever you want to know followed by "cherokee forum". And dont make any plans for the next few hours because there is YEARS of information to read.
