Because the vast majority of people wrenching on XJ's are doing so for crawling, mud, ect and not off road racing. Not a whole lot of point in lifting stock suspension for that either.

To the OP, lift it if that's what you want. The same lift will work if you convert to 4x4 later and imo it's worth it just for having the extra height to see on the road.

A lot of 2wd Cherokees you see were fleet service at one time for government and private agencies.

The average person doesn't have any use for 4wd so why pay extra to have it if you don't need it? Options are rarely a bad thing, it let Jeep sell a lot more of an already popular vehicle.

Like most people on here, I say lift it then visit your local junkyard for the parts needed to do a 4WD conversion. Easy enough. Or, you could do a rear locker and that alone will take you a good bit through the thick.

Our local water authority here auctioned off 17 '99 XJ 2wd last year. All had about 70k and were se models with PW/PL and AC nothing more. They went for about 2k each. I wanted one, but the powers that be (aka, the wife) had other ideas.
