well since they alligned it to that they shouldn't wear anymore than normal now. What do you mean offset?

So are you saying i dont really need offset joints, they want like 600 bucks to do the job. Paper says suggest replacing ball joints with offset ball joints to help with tire wear and to bring the camber up... So waste of money or not, to me doesnt seem like the ones i have are causing any problems.

are they saying ball joints or u joints. Cause if u had your axle shift then your ujoints could have went. your wheel bearings or axle bearings should be good, unless your milage is really high. Its not hard to drop your axle its just time consuming. like Dpoff said "It would take a significant force to throw it off, maybe check your centering pins, if your shackles are bent, even a bent or worn out leaf spring. It's bad to keep it like that you'll wear your tires out quicker than normal" but you will also change your axle angle too. if your leafs go back your axle ends up going up and changing the angle/putting a different angle on your ball joints too.

All they mentioned was ball joints, the u-joints were replaced 8,000 miles ago, and my jeep miles are pretty low, she just turned 90,0000.

OEM ball joints are not offset. The only reason to install offset joints is to adjust your camber. It is not adjustable on a stock XJ, so assuming your pinion angle is good, and you aren't lifted enough to need adjustable arms to set castor, I see no reason to install offset balljoints. That being said, even standard ball joints are going to run you 3-3.5 hours of labor per side from a shop.

I did mine last weekend in about 5 hours, and all it cost me was a couple of bandaids. Rent a balljoint press from Autozone or your local parts store and get after it. There is a link to a good write-up if you do a search for ball joint replacement.

Hey thanks, went back to schwabs this morning and talked to the guy that aligned my jeep. He straight up told me i dont need new ball joints, they are set the spec, but as they get older it would be smart to suggest getting offset so they can better align my jeep, and they only suggest it because its an add on and most people don't come back asking as many question as i do.

So i have to say thank you to you guys for educating me in this matter and saving me almost 600 bucks i didnt need to spend. As far as the axel thrust goes, looks like i will have to get that done and its only going to cost 96 so thats not horrible, if i had the stuff and knowledge i would do it myself, but thats the goal down the road. Thanks
