I would kind of scratch them up some before i did anything. Take some rough sandpaper and rough up the plastic then clean it off with like rubbing alcohol or something then paint

We just wiped ours down with alcohol.. Sandpaper will work too, but i wouldnt go with too low of a grit.. stuff doesnt spray on THAT thick, just a little thicker than paint.

I did my taillights, 3rd brake light, and front sidemarkers with the Rustoleum Lens Tint, and it came out GREAT. NO sanding, just warm soapy water, then mineral spirits, rinse w water, dry. Did a vy light coat first, then a second. They werent quite dark enough, so i did a light 3rd coat. lasted 6 months so far w no scratching, chipping, peeling. one New England winter and many car washes also.

I used the rustoleum tint spray from auto zone but 1 shade was too dark for my taste. I was looking more for the smoked look. I used paint thinner to remove it.

I did this on my Accord back in the day using Testors 2494 black window tint in a can. I sold my car like 5-6 years ago, but I saw it a couple months ago and it still looks great for a 9 year old "mod". Just throwing it out there since the stuff is like $3-4 for a 3oz can. I think I used one and a half cans on my Accord, which had a lot more surface area to paint than a Cherokee.
