Last time you will hear about this...
...Well from me that is haha. I have been saving up for a vehicle for a while now (20yr old college student haha) and I've had my mind set on a Cherokee. Always loved the look of theses suckers and the way they drive. Now I'm pretty close to my mark and have been looking around in my area for Cherokees, the only problem is that around here they go for about 3-5,000$ averaging 100,00+ in miles. What my question comes down too is how, honestly, do these vehicles hold up after that 100,000 mark? I know it also comes down to the previous owner and how they took care of it, but I'm just curious to hear from other jeepers and being around on this forum I have learned a lot from you guys (also a big thank you). Another thing is that my dad doesn't want to see me spend the money I have been saving on a vehicle with that many miles on it. Just want to know some of the problems that follow the miles on these vehicles. Thanks in advance everyone.

Mines a '98 with 140000 on it. Maintenance wise all I've done since I bought it last September (at 138000) is plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oil change, new brake pads, greased all the fittings and this past weekend I replaced the motor mounts as the rubber was plum worn out. With care and maintenance theres no reason the Jeep inline 6 shouldn't see at least 200-250 k before needing any major overhaul. If something does happen, the engines inexpensive (as are parts) and easy to come by. The Cherokee is also super easy to work on. Almost forgot to address your main point. They are prone to cracked exhaust manifolds and do tend to develop oil leaks as the miles get higher.

'99 with 162k miles. with a pretty big lift and pretty heavy tires, i still get about 20-22 mpg and i trust it more than my 04 dodge dakota with 100k miles. it drives almost like new and it's one of the easiest vehicles to work on.

Thanks for the replies. Oil leaks are not a big concern as my current car has it as well (ford contour with 192,000). That car however runs HORRIBLE but could also be a reason being that it is a ford haha. Just don't want another vehicle like the one I have now. Found a 99' cherokee sport with 110,000 on it 2WD asking 3,400 OBO. Want to look at this one because of the low miles, lowest I've seen in a while, and thats one of the times that brought up the high mileage with my dad. But I have heard of the reliability of these motors and just wanted to hear from everyone on here. Again, Thank You for the comments.

Also brings up the fact that he purchased a 2002 s10 with around 20,000 milage on it at around 5,000(3-4yrs ago). Just doesn't want to see me waste money on a vehicle with all that mileage and have problems with it while I'm going to college.

I paid $1000 for my '93 with 184k on it, it's got 194k now. When I got it, it leaked oil like crazy. The PO thought it had a blown head gasket. I replaced the valve cover gasket, the back three bolts were missing.
Besides using oil due to bad valve seals, she runs great. Plenty of get-up, 16mpg on the dot with city driving, which is what it's rated at. If I stay off the skinny pedal on the highway, it'll get mid 20s. That all said, maintenance is an issue. If it's not been done, expect trouble. But there are plenty of people well north of 200k miles on their stock motors.

$3400 does seem a bit much, unless it's immaculate with no rust.

Well, mine is an 89' XJ, paid 2000 for it and it has barely over 100,000 miles...my XJ has roughly 108,000 and it runs perfectly. I know someone who has one that has 300,000+ on it, runs good. But of course, they've taken cae of it.

An I6 with 100,000 is still a baby. You will probably have a hard time finding a resonably priced cherokee with under 100,000 miles on it.
