Default Jeep ZJ Shift ****

I've picked up a ZJ shift **** on Ebay because many people said it was a direct swap.

More in-depth research shows that there is minor grinding required to make it fit.

I haven't found any detailed posts about HOW to grind the **** to make it fit. Does anyone have pictures of their installations and what needed to be modded to make it fit?

Swapped out mine with a zj handle with no grinding. I have a 98. I did have to use a rubber mallet to get it to fully seat and work properly but that's it.

How hard did you have to whack? I tried using a rubber mallet AND a 2-pound sledge and that thing wasn't going on mine!

Any pictures of how and where you had to grind?

I tried what the above poster said and used a mallet, but it wasn't going in all the way at all.

I did not have to hit it that hard but it did need some adjusting up and down to get it just right.

Yeah I still can't get this one of mine to fit. Does anyone have pictures of the modding they had to do to the ****?

Might try this, not sure if you want to cut it or not though.

I have a '98 and just had to tap it with a rubber mallet not sure if the 99 is different or not.

To be honest, now that I have had the ZJ handle on mine for a few weeks, I believe I prefer the XJ handle more. So on my next JY run I am going to grab one. I would just put my old one back on but, the plastic bushing that slides over the shift lever is missing a few tabs and it just flops from side to side.
