Default I need new speakers

I have a pioneer headunit and some pioneer 5.25's in my soundbar. The door speakers are shot. I'd like to replace them before a roadtrip out west.

Here's the kicker.. i'd like these speakers to also work in my new project, a 98 ZJ. What size options do i have? Recommend a decent set of speakers that isnt too expensive?

BTW... my headunit is about 2.5 years old and discontinued.. it's a DEH-P2900.. what wattage should i get? My apologies.. never been an audio guy.

Kenwood head units are usually fair priced and decent wattage. Otherwise the "simpler" model Dual heads are good too in my experience.
If you like full sound ...not just the highs and mids... from a speaker Kicker is the only brand I know that does that for a decent price at the simpler models like the KS 5250. Otherwise I'd say that Pioneer usually settles for the price as well just not as full of sound.

Oh and a decent head unit is around 180 - 200 watts, that gives a very good sound stock. Also I believe all the speakers on the XJ's are 5.25's but ive seen 6.5's used before just had to cut the panels in the front. That probably wouldnt work for your soundbar though.

I am pretty sure the ZJ's take 6.75 speakers, but probably could fit 6.5's without any mods.

Maybe this helps...

I am also not an audio guy so I just go to walmart and pick out whatever sounds best from their selection.

Thanks guys..

ZJ has 6.75 speakers in the doors. I have read where some put 6.5's in the XJ doors, i'll have to see if i can do so in my 94.

Whats the difference between 2way and 3way speakers?

Your pioneer is a mosfet 50w X 4 of peak power measured at 14 volts, this means around 15w in rms at 12v.
For this head unit you need speakers with at least 90dB of sensitivity (4 Ω impedance) to exploit all the power. Brand or peak power is not important. Diameter is 130mm.

you can fit 160mm speakers in the xj door but the resonance volume isn't enough and you will have ****ty bass.
Two way means two cone coaxial speaker, woofer around and tweeter in the middle.
Three way is a non coaxial speaker with woofer around, mid-range and tweeter in the middle. Usually these are oval.
The cherokee has already two tweeters (famous accusound by jensen eheh) so a one way or two way speaker is ok.
The quality of sound is all in the resonance box, if the speaker is well sealed around and the box is proportioned you get the best sound.

Fantic... good info. I grasp the sizing and 2-3way description.. but i'm lost in your first post.

IIRC my rear speakers are Pioneer 100 watt.. is this enough speaker for the headunit? Do i need something rated higher? I dont run an amp, and i'm not the type who needs bass rattling my windows out.

Appreciate the input..

I like the pyramid products, they have always worked well for me in my CJ's. I have used these units a number of times and they take a beating. You can mount these in the rear of the vehicle, they will give sufficient sound and you use wingnuts on your mount and they are easy to move from vehicle to vehicle.

Just a suggestion.

Get 2 way (coax) speakers. Anything more is unnecessary. Too "busy"... All the extra highs you get w/3,4,5 ways sound terrible.

And honestly, the interior of a Cherokee isn't exactly the best acoustic canvas with which to achieve audio bliss. The difference between most high-end speakers and most low-end speakers would be lost in the big, open interior of your vehicle. I thoroughly enjoy the subtle nuances of music, but you'd need to do a bit of work to even get close to being able to achieve it.

Unless you're bring an amp into the mix, matching wattages isn't really necessary. Pick a head unit that you really like the look and feel of (don't buy from a place where you can't play around with a working unit, I don't care how cheap it is), and pick some speakers that fit the size and price range you're working with. The Alpine SPS series speakers are a great entry pricepoint, and can give you good sound off of the stock head unit. If you wanted to spend a little more money, the Boston Acoustics S/SP series speakers offer great sound.

Keep in mind that if you decide to splurge on really nice speakers, you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't use an amp with them, as they really need even small amp to shine and offer all they can offer.

Good luck!

I have a ten year old Sony and run Pioneer 6.5" 2 way speakers in the doors. I haven't had any issues with them. They just work well. I'd do it again in a heart beat.

Ok i'm back.
Lets start from the beginning: The loudspeaker was invented by Oliver Lodge in 1898.... haha JK...
What is important in the choice of a loudspeaker is not the peak power output (ie 100w), this power is hold by the speaker only for milliseconds.
What is much more important:
- the Root Mean Square (RMS) power (a sort of average power) and
- the speaker sensitivity in deciBel (dB), that means how loud a speaker can get given a specified input, and therfore it's efficiency. A speaker with a higher sensitivity will be louder using the same amount of power.
-frequency range and frequency response but that's too much into serious tech stuff...

Your pioneer has a 50w x4 output (decent), that means approx 15w X4 in RMS.
Now to use fully this amount of power you have to buy some speakers that have at least 18w in RMS and 90dB of sensitivity, i'd say two way.
These things are written on the box so u just have to read this and choose the cheapest pair with this parameters.
The rear speakers are OK.
Question: do you guys have the rear speakers in the tail gate like me or somewhere else?

So far as I know, the only speakers I have in the rear are the ones in my sound bar.
