hows my weld looking?
With your welder there should be a chart of basic settings. On a Miller it is on the inside of the welder were the wire spool is. Can't help you with settings as I am not familer with that welder. You can however buy charts at a welders supply or TSC that will give you an idea.

Well you need to hold the contact tip a little closer then that, want to be between 1/4-1/2 inch away. With the welder you have you really are going to need to find the manual online somewhere or something because it only has high and low then the wire speed is going to have a lot to do with how many amps are being pushed out. It might be close to that same Harbor Frieght welder I had for at one time so if you are welding 1/8 or thicker metal try setting it on high and then the wire feed about 5 1/2 to 6 1/2. If you are ever up this way you could see about coming through and can show you a little bit. The welder you have is a ok one for someone just starting out and wanting to do it for fun but if you plan on getting more in to it then I would think about investing in a better welder with better settings.

It's midnight. School in the morning. I guess I'll do my a.p chem summer work now(less time for the xj now) gl welding. For the future, lincoln and miller both make nice entry level mig welders. and try gas. I love it!

Yes they both make good welders but so does Hobart as well all depends on what you are looking to spend. A good starter welder for a lore price is the Auto Arc 130, not the biggest and badest welder around but a great little 110 welder and good for someone just starting out, it is made by Hobart and is only $300. It can run *** or gas hard wire. Gas hard wire is great and a lot cleaner to weld with but it is also a little more in money to get everything needed to run it.
