In the beginning I saw a lot more 2 doors than 4 doors. Now I rarely see a 2 door. I’ve never seen a 2WD XJ in person, but this is snow country. Only time I saw a 2WD Explorer was a college roommate who drove it from Texas.
For most of my childhood we had a 1985 2 door XJ 4x4, but pretty stripped otherwise. 4 cylinder, stick, no AC, no rear speakers, no passenger mirror. Red with light tan interior. One plus of the 2 door was we kids each had our own drink cubby. Someone must have been really good with pinstripes and decals, because it was a pretty convincing “Stallion” package.
I learned to drive stick with it. Steering had lots of play but it never death wobbled. Was told the carburetor nuts kept loosening, and when they did the only way to keep it running was to treat the throttle like a jackhammer. My mom would give up on it and leave it to me, and I had to get to school.
My dad had bought it from our haircut lady who he had the hots for. She kinda looked like Mariah Carey. He looked at the oil. Black. Next round of haircuts he looked at the oil again. Blacker. He was religious about oil changes but bought it anyway. Made some long trips including mid Michigan to Niagara Falls and Wisconsin. Hit a few deer over the years, eventually turned into a real oil burner, but we got about 10 years out of it before he traded it for a 96 Grand Cherokee gold package.
Only picture I’ve got of it. My sister holding a fish she caught at the lake in the background.
I tried to ask Jeep.com. I did receive a build sheet confirming the original equipment, based on the VIN. When I asked again, well...as follows..
"Is it possible to get the breakdown figures on how many of the different XJ's were made in 2000? Or at least, how many were produced with the same factory equipment I have?
I'm now in Southern California. Sadly, it's more of a street queen than explorer these days, but I still get a few thumbs-up every week
Both back in KY and out here, I don't recall seeing any other two doors. The Selec-Trac 4WD without the tow pkg. and Patriot Blue paint all probably add to a low production number"
And here is the Response!!
Thank you for your time in contacting Jeep.
We apologize, Richard. Upon carefully our system, we don't have production number post 2003.
Sincerely,
Jeep Customer Care
Sigh.... Barrett Jackson seems to have all the numbers, perhaps someone knows how they do it

They must have meant PRE 2003?
Anyway, this might have it. Back in the 90s at the bookstore I used to read the standard catalog of Pontiac, etc and I remember production numbers in there. To what detail I don’t remember. But here’s an example for Jeep.
