Salvage yards were allowed to sell anything they wanted to off the vehicle except for the engine and transmission. However, since it was a large number of vehicles in a short period of time many went straight to the shredder since some yards didn't have the space or personnel to store or properly dismantle the vehicles.
c4c was a scam to try and get gas guzzler/ poluting cars off the road. you got 3k trade in for any car towards a new car that got 10mpg better then the car you were trading in. Cars were sent to junkyards but they were only givin a day or so to pull parts off the vehicle before they had to send it to scrap.

I noticed that around my area anyway I haven't seen any 84-96 1st gen Cherokees on the road in awail now, I'm mostly seeing rusted 97-01 Cherokees on the road now. Does anyone think the XJ maybe has around 10 more years before its 2nd gen is almost gone? BTW I never seen an SJ for how many years probably since 2002, They quit making them in I think 1992.

The more likely reason for C4C is to replace untrackable vehicles with ones that have tracking devices in them.
I am not paranoid. Big Bro just wants to watch your every move.

Below is something I recently wrote to someone complaining about not being able to find any clean, low-mile XJ's anymore and blaming the CARS program for killing so many XJ's....
C4C did a lot, but it's over. It did its damage, and it's done. Thoughtless mods, abuse, and neglect continue day after day. While I still see a lot on the road, it's getting pretty rare that I see one that isnt't a rotten/cut-up/bang-up piece of junk. As far as I'm concerned, I'm more upset about C4C leading to the destruction of some very rare vehicles. Technically it's the fault of the idiots who C4C'd them and not the program's fault, but still. http://wot.motortrend.com/crushing-t...kers-5458.html http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/24/s...served-better/
I feel that your attitude is dangerous. Laying blame primarily on something like C4C can lead to dodging our responsibility to keep the vehicle we love alive. Your attitude of "there are still plenty; don't worry about it," isn't going to work forever. I'd rather not see that day that XJ's like mine are hard to find. I will say that complaining about not finding a low-mile XJ is absurd. It's been 14+ years; it's stupid to complain that there aren't enough people who bought them just to let them sit in a garage accumulating little to no mileage all this time. Who really cares about finding a low-mileage XJ anyway? These things are about as "mileage-proof" as can be.
P.S. There were more than just hundreds of thousands of XJ's built--millions.
P.P.S. 26,996 XJ's were destroyed by C4C. That's less than 1% of all XJ's ever made.
448 MJ's. One fourth to one third of one percent (161,201).
22,852 ZJ's. 1.8% of all ZJ's ever made (1,251,473).
6,944 WJ's. Less than one half of one percent (1,428,095).
2,423 YJ's. Less than one half of one percent (557,412) (I've also seen 632,231).
1,075 TJ's. About one fifth of one percent (603,303).

I see more older pre 97 XJs here in El Paso and it's hard to find anything with rust here. I was at the yard in March and found a letter in an XJ that put the total loss date in mid December. There wasn't even rust on the areas where the metal was mangled and bare.
That's about the only thing I'm gonna miss. Well, that and tacos.

We have a bunch up here.... see a few everyday including some lifted ones. They are definitely going away slowly.
So are those numbers you guys post up for XJs produced each year world wide? Because pretty sure the C4C was only in the USA and the XJ was produced everywhere. It is irrelevant, 26,000 is still a lot. Even if it was only 1% of those ever made, It was a big chunk of those that were left. Salt has probably destroyed more than anything else. Followed by selling to the JY when something goes wrong. Then there is wrecks/deer etc.
I bet a very small percentage of fallen apart due to Offroad people modifying them/destroying them. I personally have had 6 now. Destroyed various parts on all of them (engines/motors/axles), still have 2, parted out/scrapped one, sold all the rest in better shape then when I got them- I still see my first one on the road sometimes.
Hell, more were probably destroyed my natural disasters than by us "haphazard" modifiers. There is less of every single 86-2001 car on the road... that is what happens. I still see more XJs than most everything else. Maybe up here old Subarus... But thats about the only competition.
