How long do 4.0s really last?
I have 124k on the clock and I just checked the oil and it was low a hell. Refilled it, but it still got me thinking.....
How long do 4.0s really last? I've seen some people with 260k plus on their 4.0s, then I see others with new engines at 146k. What's the deal? Is it different for each motor off the lot or is it a mixture of how you treat it and other factors like that? |
Depends on how you use it and how you take care of it.
My current 4.0 has 241,000 on it.
I've seen them with over 300,000. |
I have seen the older ones go for 250,000 plus but heard the 2000+ models with milti coil ignition like to grenade around 130,000 due to a weak block casting
x2 My 4.2 in my YJ has 260k and other than the carb being cold natured it runs like new. My stepfather bought it new in 87 and changed the oil every 5k and took real good care of it. My XJ on the other hand has 130k and gets treated like a rented mule and I don't see it making it that long, at least the jeep itself won't.

270k on my '99. My '89 had 235k when I sold it. I'd say its pretty common to see 200K+ mile Cherokees that are still running great. Im sure the ones that blew up early had minor to moderate defects in parts, or were neglected.
That makes me feel alot better. I have a 1999. It was more than likely beat to hell by the previous owner, (highschooler) but I intend on babying her from now on.
my 87 has 270,000 on the clock, still runs great
I had 220k on my 95 before i totaled it, 188k on my 97, and 240k on my 99. But as stated it all depends on how well taken care of they are.
My 87 had 320k on it, but it was a 4 banger so it doesn't count. |
The Peep has never had internals touched, 531000+ km on the clock. Thats 330000 miles and counting. Runs 150 miles per day in all weather. The AW4 trans is also still kickin thru the gears in fine form. Oil and filters changed monthly.
90 has 286,000 still running strong. It was jacked up when i got it but tune ups and fresh parts for maintenence seem to keep, working.
My old 96 had 213k and seemed to have more power then my
95 with 152k. No clue lol. |
I've got 390k on mine. Lil noisy. But runs just fine.

My cousin has 350k+ on his, drives it like he robbed a bank and it doesnt miss a beat.. Its all in the maintenance.
my buddys XJ has 300,600 has of this weekend LOL and its still a strong engine
My 2000 XJ has 208,000 miles and still running great. The 1998 has 192,000 and still running good. Both are DD's but the 98 sees a lot of trails and such
180k on my 2000. Was a little neglected when I got it but hadn't been beat. Stock radiator is still going strong even.
My 97 has 211k on it with the original motor. My old 91 2 door had 325k on the original motor but a rebuilt 5-spd. I did blow one on my old 89 at 131k or so. Cleaned the sludge from the oil pan when I did the rear main seal. Blew a week later, it was weird. Also blew the 140k junkyard replacement the same week. Ran good in the wrecked one and had good oil pressure. Cleaned the pan and stuff before I put it in mine. I should have put an oil pump in it, 2 days after install I lost oil pressure and threw a rod. Lets say the new crate motor I installed got a actual gauge rather than the idiot light lol.
My 96 4.0 AW4 has 176,000 and gets driven by me in the morning and my wife in the afternoon. Double duty daily driver. Runs like a bat out of hell and even gets to hit the beach and trail once in a while. I got her from someone that drove her all the way from mass to san fran and they were the second owner. I have lived in 5 differnt places with her and she has moved my stuff each time I moved. I can get in her now and drive to alaska or south america.
My 96 just rolled over 367,000 last week. shes my DD but goes to the dunes and muddin all the time. And I usually take the trails home from work. I love it!
I don't think the Radiators are worth much after 100k. If one goes pop, it can take the engine with it pretty fast. If in doubt I'd swap the rad, backflush, and keep on top of coolant changes.

my boss has 500,000+ on his 89 cherokee(heads done once) running 35s on it for years, my 91 sport blew at 320,000 running boggers! my 93 has 232,000 and cant be beat in the 6cil mud drags(9 runs 9 1st place trophies)

I am LOOOOOOVING this thread. I may possibly be buying a 95' with 129k miles on it. Now that I'm seeing this, I feel a LOT more relieved buying this Jeep. :)

I think for the most part they last well over 200k. My 94' blew a head gasket and threw a rod at 150k. I was broke when it blew, cheapest thing I could find was one from a parted out 91' that had 225k on it for 120 bucks, but the kid swore he kept up on the maintenance. I've put another 15k or so on it and I drive with my foot to the floor often.
