Got my 89 for $1200. I knew I wasn't ready to buy but started looking in Jan just to familiarize myself with the prices. Took 2 months once I had the budget.
As far as an older model, I'm pretty happy with mine and have no regrets. Relatively low miles was my main concern.

Well the guy wont budge on 5K but he is taking it to a mechanic to have everything checked out, has the fullsized spare, throwing the skyjack, and overall the think is in very good condition. He has done to it everything that I ever wanted to have done to a jeep. And it's white to boot. lol
I spent around 5 days. I visited tons of car lots and saw lots of Jeeps that had been dragged through the woods, then started watching Craigslist every night checking all cities within 400 miles when a real beauty popped up about an hour drive from me. She was owned by an older man who took great care of his things and if something needed fixing he did it right away. I called him the night before thanksgiving day and drove an hour that day to give him a deposit because I new it would get bought fast. Sure enough, a buyer in a city further away was planning on buying it that day if I didn't. Timing is everything, just keep an eye out for a good one, then pounce on it. Got mine for $4500 with only 101,000 miles on her. 4WD, completely stock, looked brand new. Good luck!

About a week on Craigslist. Looked at two, got the second one. 1990 Cherokee Laredo 116,000 miles, 1 owner from PA, $2500. Perfect for my budget and needs.
less then 24 hrs heres the short story. i had to sell my 06 chevy avalance so i started looking on ebay for a vehicle not knowing what i really wanted but i aways liked the jeep cherokees so i checked them out and saw a bunch of different prices anyway me and a buddy decided to go and eat and ill be damn there was a very nice lifted 2000 jeep cherokee sport setting in the parking lot and i loved it so i went in and asked about it. It ended up being the managers he had just bought it and didnt want to sale it but i still shot him a offer and he shoot me down but i gave him my # and crossed my fingers and the next day he called me and we made a deal on $5000 and it only had 113000 miles and brand new tires.

After my first XJ got totaled, it took me about three months to find another. The one I ended up with was about five hours away. My wife kept showing my GC's on ebay and CL, and there were a lot of them, but I kept telling her that I wanted another XJ and NOT a GC (nothing against them, just not what I wanted). The guy wanted $2000, and I WAS going to take it home if possible, and I brought it home for $1,500.
