Do what you need to get from a to b safely. Disengage when you don't need it, and respect it when you do. Don't drive dumb caus no one in here wants to hear anyone getting hurt. Speed on a highway in a snow storm is usually 45, which is no problem even stock. But if your in Atlanta speed in 1" of snow is 0 haha

So does this any speed apply to BOTH the 231 and 242 transfer cases? I have 2 XJs now and have one of each transfer case and when I was doing research on the differences I got the impression the 231 wasn't as good at being in 4x4 on dry pavement which I would assume would be the requirement for driving at high speed. Anyway more importantly..What did somebody say about d*cks?

The roads generally look like this during the winter where I live.

No salt is used until you are closer to the city, just sand. I've gone as fast as 90kmh (55mph) on short stretches where there isn't any traffic. Usually 45-50mph is the norm. Keep in mind I have studded snow tires.

The 242 has the full-time option which is essentially like AWD. The way I understand it (and I could be wrong) is that there is something like a differential in the t-case which allows the front and rear axles to turn at different speeds. This eliminates the binding typical with standard 4x4 on pavement.

Your all turtles.
I always keep Peep under the 300 mph limit on ice. (AW4, NP231)
Especially in down town rush hour traffic.
The Jeep TCase is not rated for 300 mph.
Basically your 4x4 is good for any legal speed limit in the world and any speed you can reach in an XJ.
The choice of speed is yours. In mixed company (being the rest of humanity in a public domain) you should choose to demonstrate some consideration for others.
If you choose to satisfy your own objectives above others, then consequences are in play and if the need arises to apply; should be exercised liberally and not be pro-bated.
Let your conscience and judgement be your guide. The mechanics of your XJ is not the limiting factor here.

Resurrecting my thread for a specific reason... I just moved down to VA from NY which was a 10hr trip in the jeep. I had it in 4-hi the night before & forgot to take it out. The jeep started blowing out white smoke which its done before due to the condensation from the AC leaking onto the exhaust, but at over 70mph, she started blowing out gray smoke. Long story short, I drove in 4-hi for an hour & am wondering if that gray smoke is cause for alarm like if I may have warn anything out? Fluid levels are all good & the smoking stopped shortly after...
