How do you guys insure your toys?
Ok, so here's a question I have been dealing with for a while now.
I ONLY use my XJ for wheeling, and ONLY in the summertime, say maybe 8 or 10 DAYS a year.
It is stupid to pay for insurance coverage for this thing during the winter, and during the summer when I'm not driving it.
What I do right now, is call to set up insurance the day before I want to take it up, and call back and cancel the policy the day after. I think my insurance company doesn't like me doing this.
Any suggestions? Is there a company or type of policy that would be more appropriate?
Also- eventually my XJ will be trailered up to the trails, would I even need to carry insurance at all if I am not driving it on the roads?

once it's being trailered you dont need insurance, you dont need insurance to go offroading, and if i was you i'd just drive it with no insurance for now, most policeman would understand... but theres always that one cop

you should be able to insure your vehicle as a pleasure/recreational vehicle where it's driven less than 3000 miles a year. with that said, your premium would prob be half of what your daily driver would be. you should inquire about it with your auto insurance and see if they offer such a thing.

When I am not driving mine, my insurance puts it in "storage" until I tell them i will be driving it again. when in storage there is no premium and i get a discount on my other car for having more than one car on the policy.

i don't know where you're from but here in louisiana if you get caught driving with no insurance your vehicle gets towed, license plate is pulled, and the only way the dmv and wrecker company will release the vehicle is if you show up with up to date insurance info. no questions asked on this one over here. MUST INSURE!!!

When I was younger I got caught driving without insurance. I had been driving to DC from MD as an electrical apprentice & couldn't afford insurance plus up keep of my 87 Mazda pic up. So I get pulled over 2min from house after almost 2yrs of driving without insurance tags were labeled dead cop let me drive home but I owed sick amount of $ plus tickets. They charged me $300 for 1st 30 days then $7 a day til tags were turned in 2yrs with all fees & crap I owed $5890. Maryland don't play games with insurance hell there strict on everything MD sucks!

insurance is always a good thing to have. I rode with a group of guys and one guy flipped his jeep, it rolled down a hill into another jeep which in turn did about $4000 of damage to the other drivers nice rubi. Thankfully all parties had insurance and it only cost about $500 to fix both rigs and no one has hard feelings. But I can only imagine what could have happend if it was an uninsured rig. Just not worth it to get out of paying a small price every month.

I am an insurance agent here in Tennessee and I know for some states any vehicle off road or not needs some liability insurance, plus you never know what might happen. Simple liability only insurance here in TN is pretty cheap anyway. Why not carry it year round and just save yourself the trouble. I write liability policies all the time for just $350 a year.

I've got a YJ that i take out on vacation and long weekends. Any time I'm driving and it isn't on the trailer I pop online and get a few good insurance quotes and see if I can match them locally, you never know whats changed since the last time you've taken it for a weekend.
Cheers,
Joe
