thanks trev ill probably end up just making my own and i have a big square piece of
diamond plate laying around somewhere. i was going to try to make some kind of armor for the fenders but i think im gonna make a skid plate for the bumper instead thanks for the help!

 

i see this style of bumper everywhere and this is almost exactly what i am going to build hate to steal everyones front bumper. But i refuse to pay for something i can build for half the price of buying one, you know

 

Ive got the tj tow hooks on it, d rings on the back bumper. I built it before I was a member here. But all it is, is one piece of 3/4" x 10 flat steel bar. The underside is all 3/8 plate except for the mounts, there 1/2".

I used JCR's tie-in brackets and welded those to the bumper mounts. This makes it so I have 7 bolts on each side so winching isn't an issue.

 

that looks great also im about to buy a welder is a mig welder from lincoln good and strong enough for this type of thing

 

I have a Lincoln mig pak10 and I love it. Best 110v welder I have ever used/seen. It ran me about 550 bucks, but well worth it. I get better welds out of it than I see some people get with 220 welders. Those harbor freight cheapies are ok for some things, but not heavy welding. Heres the kind of thing you can do with the mig pak, I also have a spool gun for it to weld aluminum.

 

well im probably about to ask a dumb question what about stick welding or whatever the proper name for it is?

 

Shielded metal arc welding or SMAW, referring to a base metal electrode with a flux to burn off and cause a shielding gas. If you've never stick welded or learned about it, you would need practice before building anything. Wire feed is just so commonly used on jeep parts because it's so easy.

 

Once you master it, arc, or stick, is very strong. Just takes practice to make it pretty.

 

Damn. Thats about how much i paid for my 180 lincoln mig. Didnt come with a spool gun for aluminum. Or did you just buy it separately?

 

I had to buy the spool gun. That was welder, regulator, tank. I ordered it bran new from Lincoln thru my work.

 

I see. Mine didnt come with tank or regulator. But came with a helmet and extra tips.

 

I had to buy my helmet too! Lol. After I bought a new one, I still use my dads old helmet from the 80's

 

The one they gave me was junk. I bought the harbor freight auto dim and its freakin awesome! Cant beat it for like 35 bucks.

 

I bought a 209 dollar auto Miller helmet, I like the non auto helmet tho. The only time I use the auto helmet is under a vehicle where there isn't room to flip the helmet up. I was a professional welder for quite awhile and the non auto is just what im used to.
