Default Home brew builder here, I have a metal question

Hay jeepers dose any one on here know what type of steel is used metal bed frames are made from? I'm working on a home built roof rack and so fare I have dulled two drill bits and killing three metal saws al blades. Any ideas would help.

Don't use a bed frame because it ends up looking like a bed frame. Use conduit.

Good quality bits and blades make a huge difference .

Yep, bed frames are usually just angle iron. A quality blade and bit will make short work of them.

Nothing strong about them really. I bent a few in college.......

What blades and bits would you recommend? I have so fare used diablo and craftsmen on my saw all and a titanium and black oxidized for the bits

Get an angle grinder, you will tear through that thing fast. I haven't used my sawzall for fabrication in years, angle grinder and chop saw is where it is at. For my bits I use Dewalt metal bits, can't remember the exact ones, but I haven't had any issues with them and the only reason I replace them is when I'm being stupid and break them.

Cutting oil will work great for preserving drill bit life. Any oil for that matter, to cool the bit and give it lubrication.

Any liquid really. I have used spit and Windex before in a pinch. Not at the same time, of course.....

Bed frames are made of angle iron but it has a very high carbon content, so making it very hard and brittle. so dont use it, go buy some mild steel angle or tube.
