High Mileage Maintenance/First Modifications
New to forum. :-) Bought my first jeep. A 1995 4x4 XJ SE l6 AW4 with 174k miles on it. Clean with no rust to speak of (California vehicle). What should I do for preventive maintence? Also, first modifications? Budget is $1000-1500. Any help appreciated!

Fix whats broken. SOMETHING is broken. Upgrade as you go. As an example, mine the brake booster had a vacuum leak, great time to upgrade to the WJ setup.

Am I the only one who chuckled reading the title "High Mileage" and saw it was ONLY at 174k?
Already been mentioned but I'll reiterate....
Fluids - ALL of them if you're uncertain of when they were last changed.
Coolant/Radiator Fluid
Power Steering Fluid
Transmission Oil
Engine Oil
Differential Oil
T-Case Oil
Brake Oil
Headlight Fluid -- hehe kidding ;-)
You can change all of those fluids yourself for under $100 and it could save you TONS of trouble down the road.
I'd do a basic tune-up as well - Air filter, oil filter, spark plugs/wires/dizzycap rotor That'll cost you another $75-100
Get a grease gun if you don't have one already and grease all of your fittings under the jeep. Ball joints, u-joints at the axle and driveshaft, steering linkage. I know this is boring stuff and you want to get into mods but it's good to have a starting point knowing when the last time all of these were completed.
Engine and Tranny mounts would be a good thing to do as well but you may/may not need them being out west like me. We typically don't have to worry about all that salt/snow destroying everything -- but the dryness doesn't help either. I have a 90 and I didn't NEED to replace my engine/tranny mounts but did anyways - I'm sure it made a difference but I couldn't really tell.
As far as mods go - what's the purpose of your Heep? Daily driver/primary vehicle? Wheeling/Offroad only? Driving around town/weekend warriror?

Welcome to the forum!
Thank you, appreciate all the advice! Great forum. I'll do that and keep you all posted. Once I start mods I'll start uploading pictures and comments as a build thread. It will be my daily driver and weekend fun. Getting rid of my beautiful 1999 E320 because it stresses me keeping it clean and in such great shap (live out in the country w/rough road). Went wheeling twice with a friend who owned a TJ (switched to XJ about a year ago) and have wanted a Jeep ever since. Can't wait to get mine all tip top, then start upgrading!

Some people 150k is high miles and half dead. The jeeps 4.0 if taken care of has been proven to run 500k and we have a lot of members pushing 300k.Back to the point full tune up and all fluids change is something i do when i buy any used car or truck. This way i know everything was just done and have a long time to go before needing it again.

It has begun...

Started dissasembeling the front for the bumper I'm making.
Looks like im going to need new tranny, oil pan, rear main and valve cover gaskets. Going to do the oil pump and filters when I start all that. Lots of work ahead. Ordered Ironrock center stiffener and bumper brackets. Currently trying to decide on the design of bumpers and interior roll bar.

You need all of those gaskets? Double check the following link for your real main seal... Most of the time the leak is coming from somewhere else

Valve cover gasket go with the reusable one - I think its felpro who makes it.
