I did almost the exact thing you're doing: using HF lights and converting them to HID. Look at post #4 of my build thread. I personally went with 4300K as that is where the light is white and not blue. Purely functional and, yes, totally illegal. I'm only going to use mine on country roads and off-road.

From what I was told by my boss who was a Blackhawk helicopter test pilot (yeah, she's a badass) blue helps the human eye see through fog better. It makes things contrast more. I told her about my lights when I first got them, she brought in a pair of her old flight glasses she used, blue lenses. She sas right, things struck me as more clear on a foggy day.
So a slight blue tint seems to be nice. Mine are still a really hot white, minimal blue in the very extreme edges.
I have projectors, not just bulbs tho. Maybe thats yet another reason mine work so well.

Its about the same as they were with halogen bulbs in them; not as wide as the headlights at close range but dang bright. Over distance they fan out to cover a very decent area; I'd say two of them would easily cover the road, ditch, and some corn field and at a much better distance than brights. Once these are mounted, I'm never using the brights again! Pics really don't show it, so I don't have any. Sorry.

I'm installing a set of HIDs soon and I was thinking of buying some lights for my rack. Will I need additional lights with the HIDs, and if so, will anything help, or will they have to be LEDs/HIDs? I have to buy 4 too, so I don't want to drop too much. Thinking of the AdvancedAuto lights, then if they don't help much, upgrade the bulbs.

From my experience, put quality lights on a roof rack or they are going to be a waste. I have crappy lights on a CARR light bar that I'm about to take off because they suck. Too much glare on the windshield and my H4 conversion does the job plenty well enough.
But I think you'll be absolutely fine with just HIDs. Putting regular bulbs up top won't help too much more with visibility.

That link would be nice, thanks. Is it cheaper to convert the Autozone lights to HIDs?

Well decided to return the lights as soon as I got then today. Total rip off. 20awg wire from what I can tell coming from the light bulb and the wiring to hook it up is missing. I called and complained and was told I was full of **** and that I just wanted an extra wiring set up. Screw them I dont think I will buy from them again. At least not anytime soon
