Why not check with your local junior college and see if they offer a basic welding class? The information you would gain would be well worth it. They will tell you what machine settings to use for different applications, selection of rods or wire, etc. They will tell you how to prepare your joints for welding. If you never had any instruction, it might be well worth the cost to learn from a knowledgeable instructor.

check out youtube. there is some pretty good tips on there.
its all about your settings. most welders give a guide on the inside cover for what the settings should be at for different thickness of materials. use these as a starting point, but i have never been able to run at the recomended settings and lay down a nice bead. i usually run my wire speed a little slower than recommended.

Personally I weld/tack everyday at work an practice is the only way to get better. As stated above look into a welding class at a junior college. You can sit in a both an burn for hours just to get the feel of it on scrap. Personally I learned to stick weld then MIG weld. If you can get really good at stick most MIG welding comes easy. That's just my opinion tho

but that is a lot of fun and will help with your tig skills. This goes for all electric welding......besides the settings your gonna find out the longer the arc is (the little lightning bolt from the electrode to the material) or shorter it will effect the size of the pool and well the voltage at the weld.......also the angle at which the electrode is to the material is going to effect how your welds come out.............practice and keep trying, you'll get it

One tip with Mig welding is to make cursive e's as you make the bead. Hopefully you know what im saying here, just drag the puddle, push back into it shorty, then pull it along and continue.
