Jcwlm- it's a 91 I think. The manufacture date is 12/90 that's why I believe it's a 91. Jeep Cherokee/ larado. Trans I'm not sure my buddy says it's the Asian one because it has a drain plug on the........tranny pan. He said the American ones don't have the the drain plugs If I remember the convo correctly. And the axels I'm not sure......
if you want to run 35's your axles are going to be your weak spot, chances are you have a dana 35 non c-clip rear, and a dana 30 front. the dana 30 can be built to handle 35's, not so much for that dana 35. find yourself a dana 44 rear (certain 87-90 cherokees) a 29 spline 8.25 (97+ cherokees) or a 31 spline 8.8 out of an explorer, it will take a bit of fab to get it to bolt under the XJ but well worth it.
also, may not be a bad idea to look in to full width swaps. alot of time/money/fabbing involved there though.

i take that part about having a dana 35 back, just looked at your pics and thats an 8.25. it will be 27 spline though, marginally better than the dana 35. would still be worth it to upgrade if you plan on running 35's.

Awesome yea thanks for the correction. I'd prefer to run 33's but my brother is hell bent on me driven his 35' SS which I personaly think 35's are too big for me

Ok so I got the 8.25 rear so if I want alot of low end torque but that will help me get through some thick *** mud (mud bog) but not kill me cruising around town......than what's the best gears? Or is it better to replace the rear end.

Because I know that for sure I'm going to be on a 4.5 lift and 33's that's all I know for sure... I'd like to fully build the motor stroked and all fully build the tranny and the transfer case if I have to but nothing is set in stone just the tire size and lift is certain.

You can just weld the carrier to make a locker for now. That rear is pretty strong as is. You can upgrade to 29 spline shafts and carrier later if you choose but if it where me I would only upgrade the rear if you have money left.
If you are lifting more than 3" it would be good to invest in a slip yoke elimination kit.

Alright because right now I'm driving it as well both on and off road until I have the jeep fully built for mud bog which I guess will take me a year
