HELP 1996 jeep xj
I am looking to buy my first xj and was wondering if i should go with the 4cly or the 4.0 6cly there is a great lifted good condition 4cly one on CL for my price range but i really would like the power of a 4.0 does anyone know of any pros and cons for the 4cly vs the 6?
from what ive read the 4cly is adequate if you have the 5 speed manual in it and the one im looking at does he also states hes gets 24mpg with a high lift is that possible?
I need help before i make my mind up and buy the wrong one
what are some of the things i need to look at when looking at a used Cherokee and be weary of??

advice is appreciated.
Thanks

not sure about the high lift mpg, however i have never heard anything good about the 4cyl, but that doesnt mean its no good. My opinion? 4.0L IL6 Also big thing, make sure you check the floors for rust. Pros of the IL6? More power, it will never die, very common= easier to find used parts, at least here it is. Cons: More fuel used.

Just look for one with the 4.0L you;ll regret the 4ccl a four cylinder is not always better on fuel economy think power to weight ratio.

when i had my '90 XJ, i had 169,000 miles on its 4.0 before i blew the rear main seal. other than that, after i ran some stuff in there to clean out the crap that the previous owner had let aggregate in the head (long story, he never changed the oil, just added different weights.....) it ran like a dream.
my current '91 has the 4.0, and i hit 200,000 miles last week. Never sputters, leaks, blows smoke, or anything. Take care of these motors and they will literally last forever!
If you do or have ANY intention of ever towing, do NOT get the 4 cylinder. i have never owned a 4 cyl jeep, so i don't know about the reliability, but i can attest to them being underpowered and still not getting great mileage.
Look around, I'm sure you can find an older XJ in good condition with the 4.0 They aren't hard to find and are still cheap when you do find them!

you can do better
that looks like a decent deal, but I just bought a '95 with a 3inch lift, 31" bfg's, a set of yokohama road tires, and 164k on a 4.0 for $2k. all you are paying for is a lift kit with that jeep. find a stock 4.0L, then lift it as you want- it'll be a little more money over time, but a better jeep.

Yeah I passed on that jeep. I don't think i want a 4cly in a cherokee when you have the legendary 4.0. plus i went and looked at it and it wouldnt start so it had some problems no advertised so i told him no thanks and walked away.
