Default Help

So my 91 jeep cherokee won't start. I changed the starter and battery came back good and still won't start. What should I do now?

Is it firing or just turning over?

The lights inside, radio and fans are the only things that turn on when you turn the key over. It doesn't even act like it wants to start

Check all fuses.

Check all grounds related to battery.

Make sure battery cables/terminals are clean and free of corrosion.

If all of these check out the most likely culprit is the CPS. If that's the case do yourself a favor and get a factory mopar replacement. Basically the same price and it will last a lot longer.

Would the cps not let it turn over then?

Not sure if CPS is crank position or cam position but yes, if the sensor isn't saying its in the correct place it usually (most vehicles) prevents it from cranking and causing damage.

No, it may prevent it running, but it won't prevent the starter from spinning the engine. Jeeps have what's called a neutral safety switch (NSS) that often go bad. Try starting it in neutral or wiggling the shifter a bit while trying to start it. You can also 'hot wire' the starter solenoid. Shorting the solenoid with say, a screwdriver or a remote starter switch will bypass the NSS. If you're unfamiliar with this method, be careful, it might just start up (if the key is in the run position) or at least spin the engine if it's not. The NSS can often be taken apart and cleaned if that's the problem. Good luck!
