Default heat shield

Hey guys, How important is the gas tank heat sheild? Mine has rusted and is flaping in the breeze. Should I just pull it off or get another? what do you think? BTW This is a Daily driver for my 16 year old daughter.

Gas Tank Heat Shield??
Is this reference to the poly wrap of the tank? More for stone chipping than heat. I'd still replace or repair it.
Is there a pic you can post?
An exhaust (cat and muffler) heat shielding is important to limit heat transfer to the floor and inslu and rug. If that's what is flappin, definately replace. Home made shield in pics.

Replace it. It will keep your has tank from getting to hot from your exhaust. It's there for a safety factor

Sorry the heat sheild between the exhaust and the gas tank. I could see a problem if the pipe got bent into the tank somehow. I guess it should be replaced. Is that a part that can be purchased or would it have to be fabricated?
Thanks for your input.
