If your going to use a 4 point on the streets make sure its dot approved if not it can be a ticket. And going doorless some cops will pull you over just for that then they find other things.

The "rollcage" was flattened down almost touching my head.

I'm planning a basic cage in my XJ, but I will never use 4-5 point harnesses in an offroad rig. Even if I were to build a buggy, I would still install factory style retractable 3 point belts.
go carts eh? yeah most xj's aren't going to be doing dune buggy style speeds. there aren't many cages out there that are going to handle a violent crash like that anyway

why not though? a suspension seat with proper harness is going to be better for your back and hold you in place in a rough flop. and you can release them just as fast as you can a factory seatbelt. if not faster.

and there shouldn't be any problems keeping the factory belt still in there if you want it

Ya a friend of mine got pulled in his zj for having no doors. The cop said the tub of the truck wasn't tall enough so he needs a tube door. Than a loud exhaust ticket and ticket for not having fender flares.

The op said something about not liking how the factory seat belts fit them.So it sounds like they want to remove them for the 4 point. What kills me when i see 4 or 5 point harness is a lot are installed wrong. You want no more then 20 degree angle from the top of your shoulders to the mounting point. If its a steeper angle in a wreck it will mess up your back.

I actually didn't know anything like this or even to think about stuff like that. Thank you

Yep, it puts some nasty strain on the back. I've heard that as well.

I've ridden dirtbikes all my life and I've had my fair share of back pains. The first time I wheeled my xj all day it felt like I rode my dirtbike all day. Lol I wasn't expecting that

if you roll without a cage the roof is going to collapse, you don't want harness's holding you upright when your roof is collapsing on you. stick with regular seat belts until its caged

With a cage you kinda need to wear a helmet,Even with it padded hitting your head on it in a wreck would hurt maybe kill you.

Just what I was going to add. Even if your cage is constructed where your head doesn't touch it, your neck stretches during an accident. I wouldn't take much to cause a fracture if your head comes in contact with the tubing. Even a bicycle helmet would be better than none.
