My perspective is all other designers of suv's rip off the XJ's good lookin roots, their marketing departments know what the buyer wants to see. Hence all suv's since are animitation, (be it a poor one), the most sincere form of flattery.
The XJ died with honour before being sold into slavery like the hummer. The Peep XJ is rollin 556000+ Km.
Hummer?

You guys are forgetting that the humvee was designed to replace the old jeeps in military service. You can see where AM General got its design basis from Jeeps. We all know that for true hardcore offroading that a humvee is just too large and bulky. It was not designed for rock crawling or aggressive trails. It was made to be a combat vehicle. The new hummers exist because of the popularity of the hummer on the civilian market thanks to Arnold Schwarzenegger.

But I'm not forgetting. AM General and ultimately, Hummer/GM can trace their design and engineering lineage back to Jeep which makes my question all the more salient, I think.

There is absolutaly no connection beetwen the two. They are squared have 4 doors and a hatch and four wheels. So I guess every Suv that has no rounded corners would be based on an xj if you think about it that way. If that is the logic behind this then the Land Rover LR3 is what the xj became, the Ford explorer is what the xj became I guess. Both those are more similar and at least they can kind of go somwhere.

Right. It's not a H1. It's an H3. But how does that change that they LOOK SIMILAR...? Not every square cornered suv looks the same. But try telling me the ford escape and the jeep GC don't look similar? That is a comparison between those two specific vehicles. Just like this was a comparison between the H3 and XJ, nothing more.. Y'all are gettin way too agro...

If the liberty is the cherokee, then logically the cherokee IS the liberty. And personally, you call my cherokee a liberty and you might just get hit in the face
The cherokee died in 01, it didnt transform into anything else or anything like that.. The only survivor was the 2500, and until i see something resembling at least a 2500 in the US.. then im considering my jeep the last of a dying breed.

And FWIW, The xj developed from the full size Cherokee, that they even made in 2 door models... Just as the GC developed from the Grand Wagoneer.

Yes I admit that this is getting a bit too heated. I just think that comparing an XJ to an h3 rubs people (me included) the wrong way
I can see some cosmetic similarities, but that could also be said of early 90's exsploders, land rover's, etc. They were all 4-door bricks then that copied off the XJ's small SUV style. The grand cherokee (zj) was supposed to be the xj's replacement, but xj sales were good so Jeep made them both. Personally, i'm in the group that believes my XJ is one a dead breed.
As for all you guys saying the h2 and h3 are based on the tahoe, you're half right. The h2 was built on the tahoe/yukon platform while the h3 was built on the colorado/canyon platform.
