We drive jeeps, random quirks are a Chrysler thing, the intake manifolds on the Rams are problematic as well. I've decided to keep the Jeep. It would be cheaper to install a quality tow package and get a used trailer than it would be to register, go over the ram and replace the parts i like to replace when i get a vehicle.
I thought 12-14 was a long trailer for an XJ. I've been looking for a 4x8 or 5x10 myself. Just something to easily carry sheetrock and lumber. I may look into bigger now, sweet.

Also, I have never had any problem towing with my XJ, I also have a 5speed, never towed with an auto not sure if its better or worse. But from my experience breaking is the only problem. Get rear discs off of a zj and call it a day, will tow all day and night! =P

I moved from ny to fl with a fully loaded jeep equipped with the auto, and 4x10 enclosed trailer with the contents of my apartment, it did great. Just as you said the braking is the only problem, but if you drive with some sense its ok. I towed with the tranny in 3 to minimize downshifts, ate more gas but she pulled well.
I read about the ZJ swap but I think I'm going to the Liberty swap when its time to do brakes, it seems to be a bit more bolt on.
