96 Cheroke Sport with 49K original miles. Nearly mint. Very little rust.
$5900
In a region where most Cherokees can't survive (Northeast, with LOTS of salt).
Bought it last weekend, which is typically not a great time of year with the snow coming soon to be getting deals on 4x4s.
Patience and time and ability to execute once you find the deal are the key factors.
In most areas that vehicle would have sat for a long time that price.
Where as
KBB Excellent condition: $3400
NADA Clean retail $3987
Dealer probably gave ~ $2300 trade in.
Old Jeep Cherokees have very limited collector value, with bargain basement interest rates the best deals now are on new vehicles.
In the end you bought and if you are happy with it, I guess that's what counts.

I knew I was paying a little on the high side. But up here, they are hard to come by with less that 150K miles and rust. It also came with brand new BFGs, plus it was a 96, which I was more interested in and I don't see very often. Lots of 98s and 00/001s. So in the end I was "ok" with the price (not jumping with joy, but "ok").

I think he got a good deal, the body/paint are awesome, new tires, and with that low of miles no major repairs for a long time.
Lets see if he bought a $2,000.00 Cherokee with 200,000 miles on it he would need to spend $5,000.00 in rust repair and paint to look that good and then the $700.00 in new tires and I don't even have to go into any of mechanical because he is already spending less by getting a mint one.

Your hypothesis is focused purely on appearance and is missing the fact it's a 19 year old vehicle.
The reference prices I listed were for an excellent condition vehicle.
Bottom line is that you can pick up a damn clean xj for under $3000. You need to be patient and have cash on hand and be ready to buy when one pops up.
I guess what I don't understand is on these and many other forums is when a person purchases a car/truck/suv there has to be a certain group that then cuts it down and tells that person that they over paid for the vehicle and could have bought it much cheaper somewhere else. That person that just bought their vehicle is all happy and proud and wants to share online with his/her buddies but instead they get told they are an idiot (maybe not in such words but the same meaning) for spending more than the attacker feels they should have.
This really needs to change on all forums and people need to be a little happier for the person who just made that purchase. However if a person asks if they got a good deal or what should I pay for it then that's different..
It has been a LONG time since a vehicle has made me happy just looking at it. So in that regard the Jeep is worth approximately 1 Million dollars. So I got a deal!
Mostly I shared as much about my purchase as I could, because it was exactly these types of forum posts that helped me form an opinion about how much I was willing to spend on one. Figured I better contribute back and help the next person if possible.

i think thats a decent price for one with such little mileage and a clean as that.
Abodyjoe its the truth tho,We have a lot of members 250k and still running.I have read about a one owner one with 600k on it,Read about a zj with the 4.0 with 500k on it.
i agree that they do run that long. hell mine has 206,000 on it and runs very nice. but there is a huge difference between one with say 50,000 miles on it then one with 200-300,000 miles on it. to say mileage doesn't matter is plain wrong.
