Noticed this was lit today, I got home then restarted - the light stayed off. I haven't seen the light back on again but the volt gauge does seem to start off quite low before recovering to about 12V. It use to sit pretty much bang on 14.

I've checked the belt and it seems good and tight still, is it time to look for a new alt?

You may be able to get it load tested to confirm its going out.
