silly question but i want to know: what does re-gearing your axles do? like going from 3.55 to 4.10, what will happen?

Gears make it easier for the engine to spin the tires. Doing so increases the RPM per MPH, though. So stock, if your at 2000 RPM while traveling 55 mph, with 'bigger' gears, you'll be at 3000 RPM while still at 55 MPH.
Have you ever had a 10 speed bike? Similar situation. If you change gears on that bike, you'll have to pump your legs much faster/slower to maintain the same speed depending on what gear you select.

If its a manual its usually 3.07 and an automatic can be 3.55 3.73 or 4.10. Take a look at your diff. cover theres a tag that will tell you stock gearing for your axles.

3.55 to 3.73 are the most common for Dana 35 & Chrysler 8.25 rear axles. Re-gearing will benefit offroad by moving your power & torque bands, and highway travel with larger tires.
Basic rule of thumb for re-gearing vs. tire size -
31" Tire - 4.10:1 Ratio
32" Tire - 4.56:1 Ratio
33" Tire - 4.56:1 Ratio
35" Tire - 4.88:1 Ratio
36" Tire - 5.13:1 Ratio
37" Tire - 5.38:1 Ratio
* Taken right from Cherokee Performance Builders Guide.
But then you've got lazy people like me, running stock 3:55 gears on 35" tires.

Scratch that, I don't think that's the right ratio. Mine said 272, and that can't be right.
