I called a guy selling a dana30 and he said its from a 93 xj with the tow package.. my question is are the gears different? mine is a 98 sport with 3.55, do you think that axle might be 3.73 or is it the rear axle only that changes?

 

Call the seller and ask. If he doesn't know and he isn't too far away, you can go check it out for yourself. Do the old driveline/tire check. jack up the rear and put the tranny in neutral. Put a mark on the inside of one of the rear tires. and turn the driveline at the rear pinion yoke untyil you get a full turn of the tire. If it takes three and a half turns of the yoke, you have 3.55 gears. If it takes three and three quarter turnes you have 3.73 gears. If it takes four turns you most likely have 4.10 gears...and so on. I tried to find info on the towing pacjage for 93 XJ specifically. There was nothing. All I could find is that sometimes when an XJ was made with the OEM towing package it would have 3.73 gears. I hope this helps you.

 

I forgot to add. Whatever gears an XJ has in the rear, the front gears will match from the factory in a 4x4. The only way the gears can get mismatched front and rear in a 4x4 is if a private owner does it.

 

Thanks for that info man, but we just found out that it has 3.73 because it had the tranny cooler for the tow package... Im not gonna get it

 

Just because it has a tranny cooler doesn't mean it has 3.73s. My 91 had a tranny cooler and tow package and 3.55s. It will have a 8.25 if it has a tow package though.
