I own a 1994 Cherokee Country edition with 238.5k miles on it and the H.O. motor, runs like a beast as long as you maintain the engine and all of it's fluids and such. They are ABSOLUTELY wonderful, and very easy to work on without all the extra junk like ABS that the 00's and 01's had. My 94 having the H.O. motor, I burn other cherokee sports and such from light to light and I can notice the difference off road a bit. I love it. (This is friendly competition among jeepers.

Everytime I see one of these threads about "This Cherokee is junk. It's got this and this wrong with it...", I get sick to my stomach.
To the OP, have you replaced any of these things? Because I've replaced everything you listed (P/S Pump at 198K, Water Pump at 200k, Harmonic Balancer at 201K, and gettin ready to replace alternator), and I see it as routine maintenance for my 91. I never complained.
Bottom line, an XJ will run as long and as well as you maintain it, no matter what year it is. Treat it good and replace parts as they need, then your XJ will give you years and miles of faithful service. Treat it like crap and gripe about things going out, and you will get the same respect back from your XJ.
Edit- As for the rust and rail-hole, this could have been avoided. If the XJ didn't have any of this rust or the hole when you bought it, then a simple check every now and then under the chassis (I check mine every weekend. Takes all of 5 minutes) would be worth its weight in gold. Had the rust been spotted early, a grinding disk and some Chassis spray paint woulda done wonders.

2000 model xj / no abs 235000 miles on stock motor and tranny. as long as you keep up with the work on them you'll never have a problem. oil changes transmission flush, radiator flush, etc. trick is to fix it before you have a problem and save yourself some money
HMMMMMM.. everyone on here is quick to point out the fact that i neglected my jeep... thats a bunch of bull $hit - look at the damn pictures she is the nicest jeep around..I always changed the oil, flushed the trans, coolant flush, spark plugs changed, cold air intake ect ect..... all maintenance was done on TIME... yesterday i changed my oil - for all of you it was a 3000 mile oil change... start the jeep up and it runs fine with the normal knocking and tapping... the check engine light came on for the first time EVER!!!! cylinder one misfire, its still on today... the plugs were just changed and the coil rail has about 30k on it... i have all the heat soak issues updated and i dont think its a HEAT SOAK OR VAPOR LOCK ISSUE... we will see how this pans out.. until then im still on the hunt for a older cherokee country.... thanks for all the helpful info...

Yeah nothing you can do about rust... even the best upkept vehicles eventually succumb to it. (well at least in Maine)

2000 XJ with just under 150k. Minor rust on the roof. Motor is strong. No CEL's and would drive her across country right now if need be.
PO was a mechanic and took very good care of the motor. Had records of every oil change since he bought it. Not to mention changed the plugs a few weeks ago. They were bone dry with no oil or moisture on the old ones when pulled out.

Nothing you can do about the rust, we live with snow and our local road departments use salt. My buddy asked me yesterday how my winter projects came along, told him I just kept applying the salt. My renix has over 489000 km and going strong with regular oil, filters, tune ups. The chassis receives all sorts of love in new parts, bearings, balljoints, and liberal applications of power washer, wire brush and paint. Still the floors are rails are hurting big time. Debating future steps to start on a new rig (have another 90XJ and 89Comanchee in the wings) or make the Peep a project for some home built super rails and floors. Being so close to the 500000KM mark I want to set new sights on one mill. You stick with your rig and be proud of the work you do. The Peep will be a work in progress all the way to bare bones.
