Gas gauge and light
So I was just reading some old threads and came across a few about the gas gauge light and how many gallons you have left when it comes on ( answers varied) it got me thinking about my gas gauge and when the light comes on...it usually comes on when the needle is on the last tick before E. I don't usually go all the way to the light but when I do I fill up right away since I'm in town when it comes on so I don't know how far I could go with the gas light on.
1. At what point on the gas gauge does your light come on?
2. How many gallons are left when it does come on?

My low fuel indicator usually comes on at the tick above empty, and if I fill it right when the low fuel light comes on it will only take about 15 gallons
If I fill it up all the way, the gauge needle is way past the full tick - I think either my fuel sender is off, or the gauge is. But I know how it reads so not a big deal for me, plus I don't like running the tank that low anyways

FYI The fuel gauge in tank is non-linear, this is why needle can appear to move slowly when tank is full and faster towards the E mark.
I once had to drive my XJ way past the empty mark and below the orange area. I was certain it was going to run out but it did not, made it off the trails and to a gas station. Must have been about 3-4 gallons of reserve.

I've only gone to the light a couple times. When I fill up it usually takes 16 or 17 gallons now that I think about it. So then I guess I do have a couple gallons left over with the light on

everyone's is different. my friends 01 ran out of gas 45 miles after the light came on. his light came on at 1/8 tank, as well. do whatever you're comfortable with. i put a 2 gallon gas can in the back of mine before purposely driving it around until it ran out of gas. i wanted to have a rough estimate of range after the light. i figure 50 miles in my jeep is a safe bet and i routinely exercise that logic.
