Seems like a bit of a stretch, from 93-2008 only 172 fatal fire crashes? How many of those fires were related to the fuel tank? Lots of misleading information in that article, I'm willing to bet at least some (if not most) of those fires were in the engine compartment or from an external source (other vehicle, or something else). How do those numbers compare to other vehicle types?

Looked into it a bit more after posting that up and 10 fatal crashes and 13 deaths that can/may be realted to gas tank failure.
The Crown Vic's went thourgh this after several Police cruisers burst into flames after a rear end collision.
Its just the NHTSA doing thier thing. We will have to wait and see what the results are.

Do you hear banjos?
A vehicle made in 1993, and it took them until now to figure out there was an issue...strange!! Since regular Cherokees are so similar, I wonder if they are prone to this as well...

Apparently this is another investigation over something they've already looked into and dismissed...
"But NHTSA also said a review of other data through its Early Warning Reporting data backs Chrysler's contention that there is no higher risk.
NHTSA "did not find the subject vehicles to be over-represented for post-crash fires." "

Your right CodeXJ. There was a petition sent to the NHTSA by Center for Auto saftey back in 2009. See this link, http://wot.motortrend.com/6604830/re...nks/index.html
Thats a Motor Trend article from back in '09. They have a follow up, http://wot.motortrend.com/6678715/re...nts/index.html
No recall at this time as its stil under investigation. Hope they figure it out...

The center, citing government records, claimed that between 1992 and 2008 there were 172 Jeep Grand Cherokee crashes that resulted in a fatal fire, with 254 fatalities. The center also claimed there were at least 44 crashes resulting in 64 fatalities where fire was blamed as either the primary cause of death or "most harmful event.

Well, I wouldn't concern myself too much with it just yet. I still think Cherokees and Grand Cherokees are safer than a Smart Car, even if they do turn out to burst into flame when rear-ended.

Mine's been in two 'accidents' since I bought it. One where a guy rolled back into me and I ripped his bumper off when he ran the light (Seriously, WTF?). The other when some idiot tourist during race week rear-ended me at an intersection near the speedway. Her radiator became one with the engine. My Jeep had a few new scratches on the bumper. Pissed me off that she made me late for work.
Honestly, I think with all the stuff people put XJs and ZJs through, if they caught fire easily we'd know about it.
