Yes i know this but a 3" should be enough to fit 31s, i fit 31s underneath my xj with a 3" with minor trimming.

and I fit 31" tires on my xj with 3" lift. His problem is stock control arms pulling the tires toward the rear of the wheel well, and backspacing.

You do need sway bar disconnects and the rear sway bar removed if you have not already as it is hindering your suspension. An adj. track bar is a very good idea instead of re-drilling the stock one. The best ones are double shear track bars (both of mine were/are Rustys), I installed one of them when I increased my lift along with other items.

One my 3" lift running 31 and 33" tires I used stock Upper and Lower Control Arms but had the proper wheels. here is a photo of the 3" lift with stock arms (Top). Then at 4 1/2" using HD Rustys Adj. U/LCA's both with 33" tires same wheels.

Something about 31s and a 3" lift, or flares and 31s, or backspacing and LCAs, or the lift not being level, maybe quick discos. It's kind of branched out I guess.

Thanks again everyone and Fred I am keeping stock flares on for now... Someday I want to get bumpers and remove flares... My goal now is to just get suspension good and 31 in tires and cool wheels on it. It is my DD (trying not to drive in winter though because of rust) and for off-road fun too.

I put my sisters spare on my front and it was a 31 cooper discover at3 with 3.75 backspacing. It rubbed on the front of the inner finder, front and back of the flare and looked like it would not tuck in if it flexed in the front.

Had a 90 xj 2x4 with 3" suspension lift. Had deep dish 15" rims which worked with minimal rubbing to the outter backside in front. I cut the 1" lip back freeing from any rubbing, would rub still hitting a hard bump mid-turn though. In which could be fixed with spring spacers.
