I'm finally getting the time this weekend to change the oil in my XJ. I just bought it and it is my first one. I cannot wait to save some cash for the wheels, tires, and lift. What do you think of my oil choice?
Yup good oil but use Wix filters or NAPA Gold filters made by Wix.
Go the bleepinjeep.com on youtube and see his filter cut open display but no Wix filters there all from AutoZone but you will get an idea of the crap some new filters really are. This is a recent upload BTW.
It's diesel oil, so it has a lot of Zinc. For instance, I'm using up some Mobil 1 (syn) I have laying around and it seems to tick a little. This goes away with a zinc additive or the above. Just can't use too much, the cat(s) don't really like it.
FYI, you can use a larger filter. M1-301 (Mobil synthetic) filter - have on my XJ right now. I get at least an extra quart in and the filter media surface area is much greater.

Have a look at bleepinjeep.com filter cut open on filters the Mobile ! filter was one of them he cut open, wish he would have had a few more other than from AutoZone only. There were no Wix or NAPA filters on there and there should have been so people could compare a lot of them.
I have cut open 100's of used filters over the years on all my race motors every week when oil/filter was changed so there have a few different ones over the years and know the better quality ones.
I cut open twice as many in college as part of a project. I dunno about the "3X" ones, but Mobil 1 and K&N are the same filter. The cans may be slightly different in thickness, though if you're crushing your filter, you're doing something wrong. He gives them ratings with some misunderstanding of fluid dynamics (the pleat separation for example). The most important thing overall is the flow vs filtration and he isn't able to rate that. I think the anti-drainback is important too, so that is why a Fram filter fails miserably at everything.
