Default Finally blew up my trans!!!!

I was rounding a corner, went to grab 3rd gear and all hell broke loose.

There was such a nasty slamming, crashing, vibrating, shudder my rear view mirror went FLYING!!

I was able to nurse the truck 50 blocks home using 4th gear, however there was still a horrible slamming going on, which got WAAAAY worse if I even attempted to get a different gear. And even 4th wasn't wanting to stay in the entire time.

I knew this was going to happen, it was a ticking time bomb. I could literally hear the trans eating itself for the past 8 months or more. I have been planning for this, as the Peugeot trans has a bad reputation, so I've got an AX15 to go in.

I gotta say, though, having a catastrophic failure like this was an absolute BLAST!!!

While it may not have been as enjoyable as your experience, I was pretty happy with my transmission going. I had just bought it about 2 months before the AW4 started slipping. Lucky for me, I had a 3 month warranty! They offered me 2 choices, they'd put in a used one with 58,000 miles for free or rebuild mine for $500. I chose the rebuild. It came with another 12 month warranty, which I used when the TC solenoid started throwing CEL codes.

It's been 5 years, and it's been good ever since. *knocks on wood*

How in the world did you blow up an AX15? Ive seen them used and abused on 40"+ tires, behind V8's and ripping gears on generally more tame jeeps. Ive only ever seen bearings go bad or crack the case on a rock

Its had issues popping out of gear and wanting to grind 3rd and 4th hard since I got the jeep.

And finally while wheeling it decided it wanted to seize in gear. And will not come out .

Its on the bench and I havnt torn into yet. So it could be a bent shift rail maybe. But its been needing an overhaul anyways. So I just tossed in a spare ax15 for now

Well at least it happened somewhere where you wouldnt get stranded. Thats a good thing. But I cant imagine 4th gear take offs being any fun...ah well, at least you can replace it with the good stuff now. AX-15 FTW

Thank you! Now I dont feel as bad for declining the many invites to the badlands. I just had a nasty feeling about this, and typically my instincts dont lead me into poor choices.

Oh man, the smell of roasted clutch was strong. I can easily start in 2nd, 3rd maybe, 4th...nope! :lauhing:

Glad I had planned on replacing it anyway.

Alright...update time...

After two weeks and a day I finally got the call from the trans shop. I can pick it up anytime after 2pm my time.

So I guess I have a busy weekend ahead of me.

Yep. Had the AX15 out of the parts truck because I knew the BA was gonna blow.

I got a smokin deal on a rebuild kit thru a coworker, which helped. But I figured instead of doing it myself and possibly messing something up it would be smarter to have a trans shop do it for $450 so I can have a 3 year warranty to save my tail.
