Do you want your head liner to look good? Or just stay up? Staples would hold it, but spray on contact glue would look better.....
and as for the smell.... citrus based cleaners would work... or you could try fabreeze...lol... JMO though

For the headliner here is what my dad did.
1)Take off headliner board.
2)Bring the board to the fabric store, just tell them it is headliner and they should know.
3)Spray glue onto board and attach headliner.
Not sure about the gas.

HAHAHA.... I would use a citrus based carpet cleaner, maybe more industrial strength. Resolve, I have found, tends to be less caustic. The one I am thinking of that we use at home to clean up after the dog when he OOPSes on the living room floor, is called Unbelieveable! PRO.... a buddy of mine bought into a commercial and ordered a ton. After using it, I was impressed at not only how clean it got the rug, but that there was NO lingering odor.... I have NO idea where to buy it, but I know it works...LOL....
As for the head liner. At the auto stores, they sell a spray glue that works just like Contact cement for your head liner. I forget the name, but I used it in my chevy, and it worked pretty good.

The first thing I did was re-do the headliner when I got my Laredo!
1) Just unscrew all the grab handles, trip, visors, and center roof console thing if you have it.
2) the headliner is ONE big piece and not very sturdy so slowly lift it down and pull it out.
3) I went to Joanns and bought actual headliner. Tan for the roof, and black for the visors and center console.
4) Cut out the headliner to the shape of the roof you pulled out with some excess, spray them both down with 3M adhesive and work out any bubbles and make sure its smooth!
5) let it sit for a couple hours (during superbowl if you start early ) and then wrap the excess around and secure it with glue or staples.
6) put your new headliner back in, in reverse steps
Hope this helps, goodluck!
