how much pressure will a scuba tank or nitrogen tank hold? is it that much more than a portable air tank from the parts store?
i know people who carry a portable air tank and $20 12V compressor. the compressor is very slow, but they rarely need more than the portable air tank holds.
i also know people who have built large air tanks into their bumpers. they use 3 to 6 inch square or round tubing that is thick gaged. then weld a pipe fitting into the end and attach a shutoff valve and a female air chuck. it's a good setup but heavy. these are usually on larger trucks.

Here is a similar set up specifically for off-roading, note the price tag http://powertank.com/products/sfID1/13/productID/27 over $600. The valves and hoses are all things you can make yourself just get someone that's done it before because if you screw up your tank it's no longer an air tank it's more akin to a bomb lol

I'm from Hawaii (goin to college in VA) and you can get a year membership to a dive club for $20 to refill air whenever you want. If you live near the coast that's the easiest way but other wise you can usually find an auto shop with a pro grade compressor to fill them up again and it would only take a minor valve change to do so.

Another place you can check is paintball shops. There compressors are oftentimes the exact same as used for SCUBA tanks, can go up to 4500psi and there are usually quite a few in any given area.
