Exhaust options for chop top.. Advice needed.
I plan on chopping off the back of my jeep. If I cannot find a comanche tailgate, I will either make one out of a 97+ lift gate, or out of something else (there will be a tailgate of some sort). I've driven with my lift gate open and with all my windows down to see how bad the exhaust would be(terrible) after the chop top, but I feel like a tailgate will make a difference in the intensity of the fumes. My YJ's tailpipe was pretty much in the same place my XJ's is, and even with my doors on, my hard top on, basically just the back glass off, I didn't experience any harmful fumes. My Samurai's exhaust exited out the side behind the back tire and was turned down a hair... also a possibility. I was wondering if anybody has any input on this. I'd like to hear from people who have or have had a chopped XJ with a tailgate that drive or drove their Jeep daily.

I do not own a chopped xj at this time. Of you are experiencing fumes up front you may have an exhaust leak. Of your exhaust is facing out the back under the bumper then you won't experience fumes unless your sitting still and you have a side or tail wind blowing it to the front.
I'd check the exhaust manifold and pipe joints and links to make sure all the welds and brackets are in tact and you have no cracks..

I'm not a fan of how that looks. When my chop top is done, it's going to look like it was supposed to be that way. The doors will stay on (for a while) and I will have some kind of tailgate. Also, since I install hurricane shutters and awnings, I have access to a lot of metal and fabric. I'm going to make a soft top for that back, kind of like the soft top on an Isuzu Rodeo. I'm probably just going to turn the tailpipe to the side like an MJ.
