In my particular case the extra price is worth it

I have no idea lol. It's expensive though, about 4.30-4.50 per gallon. I just use it for my old dirt bike for now

I've only seen one post that addresses the stock/nodded issue.

When my 03 TJ was stock, 3.07 gears on 31s, I had no troubles getting 400 kms city/450 kms Hwy. Now that I'm on 35s, 5.13 gears, lifted 5.5 inches, lots of heavy extras, I'm lucky to get 275 kms to a tank under ideal conditions.

Anyone think of asking if the OP is modded with deeper than stock gearing, big tires, etc instead of calling him a B.S.er?

I live in Canada, so 97 ethanol free is available at all stations. Simple answer: yes it does help increase fuel economy. Drastically.

I live in Canada too...never seen 97 at any pump. husky has 94, but the extra octane points are fudged by the higher ethanol content somehow. There are some shell stations in Calgary that have v-power with no ethanol, but apparently not in Edmonton.

My XJ is running 31s in stock gears, and could probably use a tune up, but I haven't changed anything out of my routine/driving habits aside from the e free, and I've gone 240 miles so far with a quarter of a tank left.

Filled up today, according to an app I have I got 15.4 mpg, and that doesn't account for bigger tires with no re-gear. That's about 5 mpg better.

it doesn't make sense that a 10-15% ethanol mix would kill your mpg 30+..

That sounds alot better than when you started. If you can get the high idle under control and get back to a respectable 450-700 you will see those #s' go up some more.
In town the 31s' will sip a little more with stop and go, but on the highway(especially on long trips) you'll see a difference.
With any mods you may do the closer you keep to final gear ratio the less affected you will be. Unless you go big and add a bunch of extra weight, then fuel goes out the window.

Oh - I think the original title is misspelled. It should be: "Ethanol-Free Ga$oline: $eriou$ Bu$ine$$."

I have a station near me (6 miles) away, I think I'll give it a fill and see what the hub bub is all about.

I'm about 5' on 31's w/stock gears, finally got some bugs worked outta the ol girl and she running nicely (knock on wood). So any lill extra s/b worth it, a extra 40-50 miles on a full tank should do. LMAO
