I have only ever seen something like that once, this lady let her brakes go for so long the backing plates ate into the rotor and machined it down to the veins in the rotor...

Glad it was relatively "minor" and you didn't get hurt!

I had a caliper stick on me while going 80 down the interstate, had to tap my brakes because some moron in front of me decided to mash his while in the middle of a turn. That was not fun, worse than having a tire blow out.

That is a common OEM problem, but I am surprised the OEM rotors haven't been replaced before this. Since your XJ is a '93.The new ones are a heavier casting.

You would think they have been. I took my '92 in for the recall in 2010. They couldn't read the casting numbers on the rotors so they replaced them anyway.

I was mostly offering that advise as a way to get free rotors, even if they aren't OEM if there is an outstanding recall the dealer will likely honor it. They get paid by Chrysler regardless.

I've seen this happen before on other vehicles. It's rare but happens.
The culprit is age and deterioration from rust that thins out the material.

As everyone is saying, there should be a recall (you can now check recalls on this site). Also, to put it back together, JB Weld, Duct Tape, Bubble Gum and a big 'ol lugie and you're good to go. It's how I hold broken spidergears together. Works like a charm.
