Engine swap idea!
I have seen quite a few questions about engine swaps for 4.0l. When folks want to get more power, the usual choice is to get a stroker.
Looking into that, I found that many 4.6 strokers are selling for about 5 grand. 270 hp and 300 lbs of torque...approx.
$5000 is a lot of cash for that, IMHO. So, I got to thinking about my Toyota Supras that I used have and tinker with. The N/A 3.0 6I was 220hp and 230 lbs. The turbo was 320 hp and 300 lbs. Out of the box, they aren't super-duper powerful, but these motors can be taken up to the 700 hp range without changing the bottom end. Tons of parts are available too.
I'd bet that with some creativity and some fabrication skills, folks could put one of these motors in their jeep and then crush the competition easily.
The auto transmissions were made by Aisin Warner and I have read that they are swappable with Jeep trans fairly readily.
Better fuel mileage, quieter and smoother...and can be made to scream out tons of power when turbocharged.
If some of you are into putting money into making your jeep haul ***, you might have a look at these. You can find remanned 7gtze for $2000ish and it has about the same power as a 4.6 stroker that sells for $5k

I dont think most people doing strokers are doing it to scoot. Its done because of the wonderfully low rpm torque curve of the 4.0. If Im not mistaken the suggested engine is going to make the majority of its power much higher up the rpm scale and this isnt what is desired for an off roader/crawler.
Plenty of engines could be thrown into an XJ they just dont fit the application well. Thats why stroker, diesel and LS motors are usually the choice for more grunt. Its also why supercharging is more desirable than turbo.
I think it might be cool but not necessarily appropriate imho.

Since no one has done this swap I think it is alright here in the chat section. When and if someone does the swap then we should consider moving this to mod or build section.

oops! Sorry that I posted this in the wrong section.
I think for rock crawling, the low-end torque of the Jeep inline would be better...but for everything else, a twin-cam more efficient smaller displacement motor would be great on gas mileage and smooth driving.
It isn't something I would do for my XJ because it is plenty powerful for what I will do with it. The 4.0's torque is surprisingly solid!

It would be a nightmare of a swap,You would have to make your own motor mounts and the wiring will be the biggest headache.I would rather use a ls like the lq4 its cheap enough to buy used.A good tunning and removing the smog stuff will break the 400hp mark.
