Will an 01 4.0 fit in my 99?

The exhaust ports are different. Your exhaust won't be right.
An 01 has the 0331 head instead of the 0630 which is prone to cracking.
The 01 does not have a distributor like a 99.

It is a lot of work to interchange 99- to 2000-01.
Just buy the right generation motor.
91-99
Swap your accessories as needed onto pre 99 motors
99 will be only direct swap

XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks, and the 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1991 to 1995 YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

XJ: "Regular" (not Grand) Cherokees 84-01
ZJ: Grand Cherokee 93-98 (Gen1)
WJ: Grand Cherokee 99-04 (Gen2)
YJ: Wrangler 87-95 (Gen1)
TJ: Wrangler 97-06 (Gen2)

Thanks guys! Didn't have luck with the motor I looked at. So keeping these for future reference.

Yeah it died late January. Seems that when you don't need something you find them everywhere then when you actually need something you can never find it. Kind of annoying when that something happens to be the heart of a jeep hahaha.

Everything my team (family and friends) can find is stuff that needs love and work, is sketchy cheap or stupid expensive with and unbudgeable price tag. Or won't run. And I don't exactly have the time to put in the work for one lol
