Default Engin mil light is on and egine power reduced.

Hi I have just bought a Cherokee Jeep 2006 and the Mal light is on and the engin wont rev above 300rpm and it has reduced power ?...can anyone advise me what it could be ..Cheers x

I forgot if the MAL is the Same as a CEL light but, what country you from? Do you have autoZones, etc that can read the code and tell you for free. Bunch of different things it could be.

As sycoglitch said you will need to have the codes pulled (or pull them yourself if you have access to an OBDII reader), anything else is just guessing. If I had to guess I'd probably think a bad cam-position sensor, I believe later Chrysler engines like the ones in the KJ use the crank-position sensor for low-rpm operation and the cam-position sensor for higher-rpm operation and failure of the cam-position sensor will restrict the rpm to the lower range where it uses the crank sensor.

I'm guessing you either mean 3000 rpm? I'm not sure that even the diesel operates as low as 300 rpm (except maybe at idle).
