Dual-drive Cherokee?
Sounds wierd, right?
Someone a while back mentioned this to me. They said they were for US Postal use. I filed this in the back of my mind and paid no attention to it.
Sunday, the Mrs. and I went out for breakfast. On our way back, I decided to take "the scenic route". The Mrs. being a certified "Jeep-chick" always spots Cherokees.
"HEY, we got to turn around!"
"Why?"
"That maroon XJ at that gas station had two steering wheels!"
"WHAT???"
"I could have sworn I saw two wheels."
An abrupt U-turn (add your own squealing tire sound here)
Pulling up in front of this Cherokee, I saw TWO steering wheels.
I grabbed my camera and took a couple of pics.
First noticed the US MAIL sticker in the corner of the windshield.
Well that confirms the Postal origin of these oddballs.
I must say...It has seen better days.
BUT.....
Looking inside, I was greeted with a big let down:
Its a "stubby" steering column apparently bolted to the dash.
I could not get a good view of the pedals...But after seeing the view of the above picture: I don't think I wanna.
What a let down.

Actually those chain drive kits are quite expensive... around $1200 or so. The pedals are mounted to a bracket that bolts to the lower dash and has a set of rods that run over the heater box to the original pedal brackets. Its really quite ingenious and works well. Takes about 3 or 4 hours to install into a Jeep.
There is a site on the internet where you can order the kits or vehicles that are already modified. They are intended for rural postal carriers. Most of them are actually contractors rather than postal service employees. They are responsible for their own vehicles and buying a Cherokee and installing a kit is cheaper than buying a RHD Cherokoee.

That would suck though. You'd have to push the shifter button with your pinky finger. It makes my hand cramp up just thinking about it :-)
