I need to replace the door lock actuator(the part that all the rods attach to and keep's the door latched) encase i am describing it wrong.

I have a 97 xj, can i use one from a earlier model or does it have to be 97+?

You mean the door latch assembly? You would be better off sticking to one from a 97+ Cherokee.
